The javelin must be thrown over the shoulder or the upper part of the throwing arm (with the elbow coming through first). The tip of the javelin must hit the ground before any other part of the javelin body with the point of impact inside the sector lines to be recorded as a valid throw. Measurements are made to the nearest cm below with the measurement tape being pulled through the small circle painted on the run-up area. A trial may be interrupted by the athlete and is indicated to the official by the athlete laying down the javelin on the run-up area.
